What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a very rare and aggressive cancer. The only established cause of the disease is exposure to asbestos. An individual can be exposed to asbestos and not develop symptoms of mesothelioma for decades. This long latency period between exposure and illness is one of the many tragedies of mesothelioma -- it strikes individuals and families when they are least expecting it.

There are two types of mesothelioma:

Pleural mesothelioma - the most common. Asbestos fibers are breathed in, travel through the lung and become lodged in the pleura - the thin, saran wrap-type membrane that lines and encases the lung. The process of irritation from the infiltration of the asbestos fibers creates changes in the mesothelial cells.

Peritoneal mesothelioma - less common. This is cancer of the membrane that encompasses the lining of the abdomen.

At this time, there is no cure for mesothelioma. As the disease progresses, breathing, sleeping and eating become increasingly difficult. It becomes painful for the victim to engage in life’s normal activities. It is important to understand that mesothelioma was preventable!

Companies choose to use asbestos products, which they knew posed specific hazards to workers, placing employees at risk. One of the disturbing insights to understanding the role of companies in the mesothelioma tragedy is the knowledge that cheaper and safer alternatives to asbestos products existed.

Even knowing the dangers of asbestos, and choosing to ignore alternative materials, these companies did further harm by not warning employees. The most simple of warning and protection would have saved thousands of lives.

Mesothelioma is a tragedy that continues to plague families across the nation. If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you must act quickly. Experienced medical and legal professionals are necessities in your fight.

Mesothelioma & Financial Compensation

The large settlements and verdicts associated with mesothelioma cases are not accidental. Jurors who have the opportunity to review the internal documents of these manufacturers and sellers of these products are outraged by the actual knowledge of these corporations and access to knowledge about the hazards of asbestos.

If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, or are worried that you might have mesothelioma, you may be eligible for compensation. Medical treatment is your primary concern, however, knowing your legal rights can help protect you and your family.
